“Mnuchin Rothko at $85.8M Drives Sotheby's $433M Haul, Up 133% Year-on-Year.”
Sotheby's kicked off New York's marquee May week with a $433.1 million modern and contemporary haul on Thursday — 132.7 percent above the equivalent sales last spring, despite fewer lots on offer. The Mnuchin estate's 11-lot opener brought $166.3 million within estimate; its anchor, Mark Rothko's Brown and Blacks in Reds (1957), hammered at $74 million and totaled $85.8 million with fees, the second-highest Rothko ever sold publicly at auction. The follow-on contemporary sale of $266.8 million yielded a 91 percent sell-through, led by Basquiat's Museum Security (Broadway Meltdown) at $52.7 million and a series-record $24.8 million for Warhol's Brigitte Bardot. Christie's S.I. Newhouse evening sale follows Monday.
